Review: Hard Candy by Madonna

Madonna’s latest album Hard Candy is a tasty confection. And is quickly becoming my favorite of her career. Confessions On A Dance Floor (her previous studio album) was a future-pop, dance party disco which brought Madonna back to her core. It was hyper, effective pop music but it left Madonna’s character lost in translation. Hard Candy seems to be an extension of Confessions’ danceability. But Hard Candy comes with a more playful Madonna — the one America fell in love with in the 80′s.

Hard Candy is Madonna’s tightest and most cohesive album to date. Thanks in part to super producers to the likes of Timbaland & Nate Hills, Justin Timberlake and The Neptunes. Madonna is in a vibe of collaboration. She’s the passenger in her own vehicle, relaxed and receptive. The sharp, stingy highs and funky lows of her counterparts blend well with her mousy vocals. Hard candy is layered with refreshing sexual innuendo. A booty blend of the past three decades. And a nice package indeed.

This is Madonna’s last studio album with Warner Music before moving on to Live Nation. What will a contract-less Madonna bring to the table? Simply this: I can’t wait to she what she does next! And that my friends is what Madonna does best.
